Hunter Education Course




The Jamestown Rifle Club offers a NYS DEC Hunter Education Rifle Course which is open to all club members and the public twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The course is taught by NYS Certified Hunter Education Instructors. All students must be at least 11 years old or older to take the course (Note: The NYS minimum hunting age is 12 years old). Students age 11-16 must have a signed permission form from their Parent or Legal Guardian in order to be allowed to handle and shoot a firearm during the course (Click here for form).

Topics which are covered by this course are: Firearm Handling / Safety, History, Firearm Parts / Ammunition, Proper Handling / Storage, Basic Marksmanship Skills, Laws & Regulations, Wildlife Management & Identification, Hunting Safety and Hunter Ethics & Responsibility.


The next Hunter Education Courses to be held at the Jamestown Rifle Club are scheduled for:
*Sunday, April 14th from 8am-5pm & Sunday, August 18th from 8am-5pm*


*Attention All Students! Prior to arriving for the course, you MUST complete the following steps:*

  • Go to the NYS DEC website here

  • Under the 2nd green heading which says "Register for a Hunter Education Course", click the link and register for the NY Hunter Education Course at the Jamestown Rifle Club (Search under Zip Code 14701). MAKE SURE YOU REGISTER UNDER YOUR FULL LEGAL NAME, DO NOT USE NICKNAMES!

  • Once you have registered, return to the NYS DEC site here. Under the 3rd green heading that says"Homework and Study Materials", follow the instructions and complete the Homework Worksheet. BRING THE COMPLETED HOMEWORK WORKSHEET WITH YOU TO THE CLASS! Failure to bring your completed homework with you to the class could result in you being turned away!


*Please arrive early for the course, as there will be paperwork to complete prior to the start of the class. The class will begin promptly at 8:00am, please be on time!*
